To echo the sentiment surrounding the end of 2016, there have been the highest highs and the lowest lows. It’s been a universal rollercoaster that seems to have sunken even lower in the past few weeks, almost underground. However, I’m full of hope that 2017 will be better. We could all use a little breather. More kindness and compassion, less anger and fighting. More progression. We need to look forward and move past this muck. Pick ourselves up again and wipe off the sadness and frustration. 2017 is a time to start anew, invigorated to fight for the things we believe in. Through kindness. We need to come together, not apart.
I’m closing out the year with a wonderful New Years’ Eve (or anytime) cocktail for you. It started out with Traverse City Whiskey, a Michigan company I discovered and have come to love. Smashed with lemon and a one minute honey simple syrup. I decided to make it a bit more celebratory by topping it off with champagne. It’s full of whiskey flavor enhanced by the lemon and champagne, with a slight sweetness from the honey. I muddled mint for color in subsequent drinks and loved it even more.
I made several of these drinks for the people I was with and they were a hit. We’ll be making them again tonight to kick off the festivities. It’s simple and unique and absolutely delicious. Feel free to finish off the rest of the champagne tonight. Because when we wake up it’s a new year. And we’ve got work to do.
- 1 oz whiskey or bourbon
- ½ oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tsp honey mixed with ½ tsp warm water
- 1 oz dry champagne
- Mint, to taste
- 1 lemon twist to garnish
- Mix up the honey simple syrup by combining honey and warm water until fluid.
- Add whiskey, muddled mint, lemon juice, honey simple syrup, and ice to a mixer and shake.
- Strain into a glass and top with champagne. Add more mint and lemon twist to garnish.

Happy New Year! Enjoy the smash.
